Guest Post and Giveaway with Joanna Campbell Slan

It's my pleasure to welcome Joanna Campbell Slan to visit with us today. She is one funny lady so enjoy this guest post. Don't forget to scroll all the way to the bottom and enter the contest. This is one you won't want to miss!

ANYTHING I WANT…SHE SAID I COULD! Honestly! She did . . . . .

Wow, what a trusting soul.

See, I could write about my books and the new one Cut, Crop & Die which is out this month. Or about scrapbooking, which I love and tackle in my character’s blog Or about my office. Yeah, my office. What a disaster. It’s a total mess because this morning I finished making a new belly band for my Bichon-poodle mix dog, Rafferty.

I can hear you scratching your head. “What’s a belly band?”

Well, it’s a garment for your pooch. It’s also known in the UK as a “wanker wrapper.” Essentially, it’s a doggy diaper designed to keep dear Rafferty from decorating our home in shades of yellow. See, he’s a rescue pup and he’s awfully attached to me. So when I’m out of sight, he…uh…dribbles.

I lie.

He doesn’t dribble. He squirts! With gusto!

(Right about now, Kaye is taking an oath NEVER, EVER to let an author write about “anything she wants.” Sorry, Kaye, but life is chock full of hard lessons.)

Last night, Rafferty got upset because my home-from-college son was trooping around the house at 3 a.m. So Raffie decided to cry. And squirt. This was bad because my dear husband forgot to strap Raffie into his old belly band. My husband claims he couldn’t find the belly band. Today I’ve made a new one and we have TWO belly bands. It’s harder to lose TWO of anything. (Trust me, I know this from experience.)

So, to recap: Last night at 3 a.m., Raffie’s crying woke me up. I ran downstairs to see what was bothering my dog because that’s what a good dog-mother does. That’s how I stepped in the squirt. If I hadn’t already been awake, I surely was after my toes got wet. I let Raffie outside, put on Raffie’s belly band—which was sitting RIGHT there for goodness sake!--and went upstairs to wash my foot.

Consequently, I am of no earthly use to anyone. Anyone! Including our dear Kaye. Who will never, EVER, let an author write about “just anything” again.

It's fine with me, Joanna, I did tell you that you could write about anything. You surprised me, but of course you did make me laugh out loud as usual. Thank you so much for sharing your wit with us and for generously allowing me to give away two of your fun books.

And now on to the giveaway. Joanna is generously giving away two copies of her books; one copy of Paper, Scissors, Death and one copy of Cut, Crop & Die . When the winners are notified, the first winner to respond with their address gets their choice of which book. I've read them both and enjoyed them immensely. No matter which one you win, you will like it! I promise. Just for a refresher in case you missed (really, you missed it?) the stellar review of Cut Crop & Die, see here.

For your official entry: tell me what, if any, kind of crafts you enjoy doing.
For 3 bonus entries: become a public follower.Already one? That counts!
For 1 more bonus entry: put link to contest in your sidebar.

*****EEEK. . . . Scrap Girl reminded me I didn't state if International. I am so sorry, but it is US and Canada only. **** Again, my apologies

***Please, only one (1) comment box is necessary, just leave a little space between your answer and your bonus entry comments. Also be sure to leave an e mail address so I can contact you when you win! Deadline is 5 PM on June 21st. Thanks for visiting. Good Luck!

  1. This post was hilarious! My son is home from college too but his being awake at 3AM doesn't bother the dog - it bothers me. I really don't do crafts too much these days, but I enjoy needlepoint and paper crafts. I subscribe in Google Reader. milou2ster(at)

  2. You didn't say whether this was an international comp or not. If it is, count me in please. I am already a follower and a scrap addict. I saw Joanna's books advertised in the English scrap magazines. She also judges the Scrapbook Inspirations scrapper of the year comp. She is fab!

  3. I stopped being crafty when I had kids!! I used to cross stitch.

    I follow.

  4. Welcome to Joanna Campbell Slan! I love cozies, and I love craft cozies too. I also like to try doing different crafts. Thanks for entering me.

  5. I do a little bit of scrapbooking when I have time, but I spend most of my free time reading :)

I am already a public follower.

  6. Good morning to all of you! Scrap Girl, thanks for the nice mention of The Best of British Scrapbooking contest that I run with ScrapBook inspirations Magazine. It's great fun, and the talent is super.

Bermudaonion, I agree. I hear my son as he bumps around, even if the dogs don't.

MJ, it sure can be hard to craft when your kids are racking around. But you'll get back to it.

Tea, I love trying new crafts or incorporating "old" ones into whatever I'm doing. Like, I really want to try to crochet an edge around my s'b'k pages. I've see that, and it's very nifty.

Booklover1335, I'm so glad you read. It's a portal to other worlds...and often a good laugh.

Nice to meet you all! And big thanks to Kaye.

  7. My hobbies are blogging, reading and sewing...

Thanks! heidivargas [at] live dot com

  8. I wish I was more crafty, I think I could be good at it if I had the time! but I am a digital artist:

  9. I am not crafty at all, but I buy lots of crafts! Does that count?

I am also a public follower.

I am a google reader subscriber.

  10. Ok - this series has been on my TBR list for a while and I have actually interested a friend in the series as well. I definitely want to be entered :)

I was a scrapbooking consultant for 10 years, so papercrafts are definitely my hobby, although I don't spend nearly as much time with that hobby anymore; hopefully when the last one leaves the nest I will have a bit more time.

I am most definitely a public follower!!

  11. I love to decorate..the painting, stenciling, faux finishes. Then moving onto bedding, curtains and pics and stuff on walls. I know that it not really a craft but I really enjoy it

  12. Hi! Just blogged about this at Win A Book.

  13. I've never read a mystery (actually, any genre!) around the theme of scrapbooking before! So that would be a first.

I'm having a go at my first book-based collage (i.e. with images taken from a manuscript I wrote). It's fun but I'm trying to fit way too much in.

I'm a follower. I'm not sure what the 'public' part is, though.

  14. Reading and discovering new authors is definately my hobby!

  15. This is great! I was already interested in these books after you wrote about them Kaye but now I can't wait! Joanna obviously has a wonderful sense of humor and boy can I relate to late nights, college boys and dog pee! With three teens (two in college), three dogs (one is a little old man who "squirts" a lot!) and insomnia, that stuff all happens at my house.

I majored in graphic design many years ago and I love to be artistic and crafty. I don't always get the chance to work on stuff but I love to draw, paint, x-stitch, scrapbook, knit.. whatever sounds like fun. My next project is going to be a wanker wrapper for my little old man dog. Thanks for the idea!

I am a follower now and forever.

I added this to my sidebar days ago!

  16. I enjoy crafts but don't seem to have much time any more. I enjoy painting and drawing. I want to learn to sew. I also enjoy counted cross-stitch. I've tried scrapbooking but I don't do it faithfully.

    I'm a new follower.

  17. I like making bookmarks. :) But I keep them for myself or give them to family. And I have only made a few because I can get very impatient.

    I also follow.

    And I blogged:

  18. Well, I'm currently making a Christmas rug for my mother.
I'm not a really a big craft person.

  19. I'm not very artistic so no crafts except a little needlepoint. My fave hobby is travel - anywhere!

    I subscribe in google reader

  20. I loved the dog story! When I was in early grade school we had a cat that liked to hunt small animals and drag them into the house in the middle of the night. There's nothing quite like stepping on bat innards with your bare feet on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. :P I'm so glad our current cat doesn't do that.

The only crafty things I do (and that's rarely) is some scrapbooking and crocheting.
    akreese (at) hotmail (dot) com

  21. Dear Just Me--buying craft stuff definitely counts. When I can't craft, I buy. That way I am guilted into crafting later.

  22. Whew, you all are cracking me up. Bat innards? Wow. That's a new one.

Yes, there are now mysteries that feature a scrapbooker--and other crafts. It's the perfect marriage. Even books with pet sitters, like mhy blog sister Linda O. Johnston writes.

I have loved reading what you-all have said. Now I'm off to the circus with my husband. It's my birthday gift!

  23. I enjoy cross stitch, art journaling and collage.

    I am already a follower.

  24. OMG-that was positively hilarious! One of the best guest posts I've read in a while. Luckily my dog doesn't dribble or squirt but just the thought of the belly band has me laughing out loud.

I'd love to enter of course! Crafts I love to do are knitting and crocheting. I love making dishcloths, towels and afghans.

I'm already a follower and I'll post in my sidebar Kaye.

    Great giveaway!

  25. My favorite craft is photography

  28. What a fun post! Very unexpected and charming. Crafts? I used to make my own cards. I tried to make a quilt. I've done vacation scrapbooks, but not to the degree that matchies any die-hard scrapbooker. Now that I think about it, I'm not very crafty ;)

  29. Well, letting authors have free rein is half the fun of a guest blog. You never know what's going to be said! I tried my hand at scrapbooking but could never really bring myself to cut up any of my pictures and once my computer ran out of ink... well, you get the idea. However, I've always loved to make stuff and I'm good at it too. I tend to make most of the stuff that goes along with a gift if I have the time (the card, sometimes the box, etc.).

    Already a follower!

  30. I love to scrapbook. Please include me in your giveaway.

    I am a follower.

  31. I am enchanted and find this guest post a hoot! So enjoyable, thanks for having it, Kaye! My hobbies are reading and writing but I also am a beginner at scrapbooking as I have done some. I would love to read both of these books. Finally, I thought of saying I also care for penguins that have been abandoned but was pretty sure you wouldn't believe me if I said that since we live in FL!

  32. I'm a frustrated crafter. I've done counted cross stitch, scrapbooking & quilting but didn't stay with any of them. Guess I'll just stick to reading. That, I'm good at! :0)

    librarygrinch at gmail dot com

  33. I cross stitch and do whatever my kids need my help with. Usually keeps me extra busy. I'm going to try scrap booking, I hear it's very time consuming!

    Please enter me!

    Dottie :)

  34. Ooh! Sweet! I love reading cozies, and scrapbooking (and knitting, and fiber arts, and cardmaking, and sewing, and...). I have been wanting to put them together.

    I am a follower!

  35. I forgot to include my email address!

  36. I would love to win both these cozies. My crafting involves crochet. Right now I'm crocheting a scrap afghan. There are 48 blocks. I have a long way to go because I've only crochet 12 blocks. I like to crochet for babies too.

  37. I have a link on my blog to this blog. I already follow you.

  38. I enjoy keeping my own scrapbook. It's so much fun. If this is international one, please count me in.

  39. I used to craft a lot - crocheting, needlepoint, embroidery - but I've gotten away from it. Now, on occasion, I will make some greeting cards.

    I follow

  40. I love doing any crafts with my son. :)

  41. I do mostly papercrafting--altering things and using my brand new cricut. You name the craft though, and I've tried it.

  44. I love to cross stitch, sew, crochet, needlepoint and embroider. I use to do decoupage and bead work but gave that up a long time ago.
