Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Bermuda Onion. This is where we share new to us words that we have come across during our week of reading. My words this week are all taken from Worshipful Lucia by E. F. Benson. PBS ran a series taken from these books called Mapp & Lucia with Geraldine McEwan as Lucia. Unfortunately I did not write down the page these words were on so I can't use it in the original sentence. The brief scenario is that Lucia was having some work done in her garden and found pottery shards that convinced her she was living on top of a Roman acquaduct. Hilarity ensues as she alerts the media

We encountered a few mephitic places when we were in New York recently. I sure hope I used that correctly. Thanks for participating.

ReplyDeleteI had a feeling that mephitic might be related to the name of a god/demon (Mephistopheles?); according to Wikipedia, Mephitis was the Roman goddess of noxious vapours!
The only one I've heard before is tesselated; I wish I could remember the context in which it was used!
